McLaren Formula 1 Driver and double World Champion Fernando Alonso will be a featured speaker in a keynote session taking place on Tuesday, 27 February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Widely regarded as one of F1’s most talented drivers of all time, Alonso has also challenged himself by competing in the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 24 Hours in the past year. This season, Alonso is focused on returning McLaren to the front of the grid and will also compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Alonso will be joined onstage by Zak Brown, Executive Director of McLaren Technology Group. In this session, Alonso and Brown will share their perspectives on the intersection of motorsport and cutting-edge mobile technology. McLaren increasingly relies on connectivity and sensors as a critical tool in optimising the performance of all of their cars, both F1 and road, and collaborates with a broad ecosystem of companies from the technology and mobile industries to provide these solutions.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Mercedes-Benz is presenting innovations and initiatives from a variety of fields as part of its overarching digitization strategy. The press conference is to be held on 26 February from 11 a.m. to 11.20 a.m. at the Mercedes-Benz stand in Hall 6.
The focus here is on systems with artificial intelligence (AI), such as the multimedia system MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience. The new A-Class with the intuitive, teachable MBUX is celebrating its show premiere in Barcelona. MBUX can be individualised and adapts to suit the user. Map display supplemented by augmented reality is a new feature.
For Daimler the use of artificial intelligence is a central future topic, be it in Development, Production or the use of vehicles and in mobility services.
The start-up fair “Four Years From Now” (4YFN) takes place in parallel to the MWC in Barcelona, and Mercedes-Benz also has its own stand there too. First Streetlight-Powered Small Cell

u-blox F9 GNSS
u-blox (SIX: UBXN), a global leader in wireless and positioning modules and chips, has announced the u-blox F9 technology platform, delivering high precision positioning solutions for mass market industrial and automotive applications. The platform combines multi-band Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology with dead reckoning, high precision algorithms, and compatibility with a variety of GNSS correction data services to achieve precision down to the centimeter level. u-blox F9 paves the way for the next generation of high precision navigation, augmented reality, and unmanned vehicles.
The u-blox F9 platform will underpin the next wave of u-blox positioning modules targeting mass market industrial and automotive applications. It uses GNSS signals in multiple frequency bands (L1/L2/L5) to correct positioning errors caused by the ionosphere and deliver fast time to first fix (Fast TTFF). Its ability to receive signals from all GNSS constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou) further improves performance by increasing the number of satellites that are visible at any given time. Stand-alone u-blox F9 solutions robustly achieve meter-level accuracy.
To achieve centimeter-level accuracy, u-blox F9 offers optional on-chip Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technology. In addition to offering an open interface to legacy GNSS correction service providers, it supports the main GNSS correction services, taking RTK high precision positioning to mass markets for the first time.
The u-blox F9 platform’s technology benefits will be showcased at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany from February 27 – March 1 at Booth #3-139. Product samples will be available in the course of 2018.
Octo with SAS
Octo Telematics (Octo), the number one global provider of telematics for the auto insurance industry, has announced that it will be attending the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018.
Octo will be present at the booth being hosted by SAS, the global leader in analytics. SAS and Octo partnered on the development of Octo’s Next Generation Platform (NGP), its unique IOT insurance platform. Facial Recognition EasyOpen for Mobility
IDEMIA, the global leader in Augmented Identity for an increasingly digital world, announces today that it has implemented facial recognition technology on EasyOpen, a solution previously developed with its partner Omoove, a wholly-owned Octo Telematics company, Europe’s leading Shared Mobility technology provider. The digital enrolment process combined with facial recognition technology will securely enroll and authenticate the driver before EasyOpen automatically opens the car.

The first version of the solution was launched last year and allows drivers, who have already registered on the application, to use their smartphones as a key to open their cars in a secure way.
This year, both companies have just announced the introduction of a new process for the digital enrollment of the driver combined with facial recognition technology, which will be implemented into EasyOpen solution.
This solution uses the smartphone to create the identity of the driver by registering ID documents in a fast and user-friendly way, while afterwards granting access to the car through a selfie thanks to IDEMIA’s facial recognition.

The Xperi Experience at MWC
Xperi Corporation will present its latest audio, broadcast, imaging and semiconductor bonding solutions from its subsidiaries, DTS, FotoNation and Invensas, at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. AUTOMOTIVE AND BROADCAST
Xperi’s automotive and broadcast solutions that will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2018 include DTS Connected Radio and FotoNation’sDriver Monitoring System (DMS).
Utilizing the embedded modem in the vehicle or a brought in paired device, DTS Connected Radio platform combines both over-the-air analog/digital AM/FM radio content with IP-delivered content to create an innovative AM/FM experience in the vehicle. DTS Connected Radio receives metadata, such as artist and song title, directly from local radio broadcasters, which is then paired with IP-delivered content, creating an engaging in-vehicle hybrid radio experience. DTS Connected Radio is planned to be commercially available in the second half of 2018.
At the core of FotoNation’s DMS are leading computer vision technologies that enable attentiveness assessment, fatigue detection and driver drowsiness, as well as cabin security and customization options based on driver identity. On display will be the FotoNation DMS Core Library, fully operating off the Texas Instruments TDA-3x ADAS platform from a single-camera. Demonstrated feature sets include face detection, head positioning in 3D, eye position in 2D and 3D, and eye opening levels.
At Mobile World Congress 2018, Invensas will showcase its DBItechnology in sensor enhancement applications in automotive and mobile devices at the Xperi booth. Invensas’ DBI and ZiBond semiconductor bonding solutions are foundational technologies for next-generation electronics. These solutions currently enable the image sensors in billions of smartphones and tablets around the world.
DBI technology is a low-temperature hybrid wafer bonding solution that allows wafers to be bonded with scalable fine pitch 3D electrical interconnect without requiring bond pressure. ZiBond is a low-temperature homogenous direct bonding technology that forms strong bonds between wafers or die with same or different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE).
